Helsinki was founded in 1550 and became the capital of Finland in 1917, when Finland became independent. There are over 600.000 inhabitants in Helsinki. Helsinki is a seaside city and has a climate that is a mix between a marine and continental climate; making winters usually kind of mild. There are several islands at the front of Helsinki. Suomenlinna is a seaside fortress on several of these. Several big ferries shuttle every day between Helsinki and Stockholm and Helsinki and Tallinn. There are two airports, Malmi airport for general aviation and the main airport in the neighbor city of Vantaa. In the following pages I will describe Helsinki and her architecture in more detail.
