The Central Railway Station

The Central Railway Station in the hearth of Helsinki is a known landmark. All of the metropolitan area commuter trains leave from here and most of the express trains to other parts of Finland also. Additionally trains to Moscow and Leningrad also leave from here. Some 240.000 passengers pass through the station every day. The railways themselves were built already in 1860s. Transportation agency owns the railways and VR operates the trains. The station building itself was designed by Eliel Saarinen and is made out of granite. It’s clock tower is famous. In front of the building are four statues by sculptor Emil Wickström called Lantern Carriers.  The Helsinki Central Railway Station and especially the four statues have become the symbol of whole railway system in Finland. VR often uses the statues in its advertising.
