The King’s gate is the symbol of Suomenlinna. It is the original main entrance to the fortress and was built in 1753-1754. It was built to the place were the ship of the king Adolf Fredrik of Sweden was anchored in 1752. It is a two-storied, curved gate framed by marble stones. In 1770 it was changed into a drawbridge and the steps were built in front of it. The King’s gate and stairs have been renovated three times. From the gate one can admire the big ferries on their way from Helsinki to Stockholm maneuvering through the strait.
This pic is not from King’s gate, but one can get the idea how the ferries look like.
